GREAT IDEAS: Your Oxygen Mask First by Kevin Lawrence {Interview}

Lessons from the book, and our interview with Kevin Lawrence

"You need to work on your life as a R&D project” – Kevin Lawrence

Kevin Lawrence says that leadership is a completely crazy way to spend your life. But, it’s also ridiculously amazing. In his book Your Oxygen Mask First, Kevin offers help for high achievers to survive and thrive in leadership and life. Here are his great ideas:

Are you suffering for your work? A lot of leaders deeply, deeply suffer, often to the point where they aren’t able to continue the growth of their company. Your life might look great but it won’t feel great. Don’t ignore your mind, body, and spirit.

You can’t get away with it anymore. A single, 25 y.o. might work 80 hours a week and go to the gym and do things for themselves. But, those with families are likely to stop going to the gym or doing things that rejuvenate them. It will catch up with them.

Figure out your sweet spot. Let go of the stuff that isn’t your strong suit or passion. Spend 80% of your time and energy doing things you love to do, the way you love to do them.

Gather a team of experts. Find 24 people one text away who can help you. It’s a complete waste of time and energy to solve every problem on your own. They may include a lawyer, accountant, business coach, psychologist, and personal trainer.

The way you live right now will be how you live your future. Entrepreneurs think they’ll work really hard for 10-20 years then sell, and “enjoy their life”. But that’s not what happens; they end up with money, but they’ve destroyed their life along the way.  Write a one-page Master Plan for work, self, and life.

Pre-book next year’s holiday now.

Stop being Chief Problem Solver. Articulate your goals and expectations. Let your team make 90% of the decisions.

Five Ds method: List everything that’s bothering you: Catching up with past taxes, doing a will, fixing a scratch on your vehicle. Then either Do it, Don’t do it (right now), Delegate it, Delete it, Date it.

Being stupid is expensive. A study showed that the top CEOs read 25 books a year. Decide if you want to be great or mediocre. Start with four a year. Commit to it as a team. Audio books work well. Read on vacation or on planes.

The more you succeed, the more people LOVE your ideas. But, is the opinion just clouded by your success? Get the truth. You’ll travel a rockier road with only your own insights to fuel you.
