GREAT IDEAS: Renegades Write the Rules by Amy Jo Martin

Highlights from Amy Jo Martin Interview

A social media chat with the woman named the third most powerful person on Twitter? Yes, please!

Amy Jo Martin is a social media expert and author of New York Times best-seller Renegades Write the Rules. Here are some of her Great Ideas on doing better with your social media and the perks of an instant feedback loop.

You are you, and that becomes a brand.  Humans connect with humans, not logos. Studies show loyalty, connection, and ability to convert skyrockets when the customer knows who’s behind the brand. It’s important for authority figures to show up.

Don’t think of social media as just marketing. Social media is an immediate feedback loop. It’s a free way to hear from your customers, and immediately. You are the media, the opportunities are endless.

Decide which content bucket you’re filling. You really need to stop and map out what value your customer is getting from you. Is it exclusive information or content, education, inspiration, reciprocation, or entertainment?

If you’re outsourcing your social media, it’s important to be extremely clear what you want to happen. Is it to increase your following? Is it to increase conversion? Is it to research for new product launches?

Characteristics of the perfect social media post.  It answers the customer’s What’s in it for Me? (WIFM) question, offers value, makes sure the business is being unapologetically true to itself and its core offering, doesn’t post in a way that’s not aligned just to get more engagement or likes, and it’s experimenting.

  1. Recommended book: Essentialism by Greg McKeown
  2. If you could co-author a book with anyone, who would you choose, and what would the title be?  Simon Sinek and, maybe, Why Not Me?
  3. Favourite piece of advice? Where purpose, passion and skill collide, impact resides.
  4. Daily ritual? I do transcendental meditation every morning. It’s non-negotiable.
  5. Low moment in life and how did you recover? My purpose problem was one of the darkest moments in my life. I was a first time entrepreneur, with a large company doing very well. It looked great from the outside but it wasn’t in alignment with who I was on the inside. Simon Sinek helped me find my why (helping others in difficulty and having others help me).
  6. Something about you we don’t know? I live in a forest and sometimes I see more animals in a day than people. I travel often so it’s a balance.
  7. What’s the secret to success? Significance
  8. What’s a prediction for 2025? Simplification of technology and a lot of consolidation.
