Highlights from Linda Kaplan Thaler's Interview
Talent won’t win against Guts, Resilience, Initiative, Tenacity (GRIT)
Current research shows only 2% of people born with a genius IQ will be successful. Having few obstacles early in life robs them of the opportunity to develop tools to get through roadblocks later in life.
Linda grew up a Bronx kid
Linda worked to buy textbooks as her parents had no money. She credits her resilience and work ethic from growing up in the Bronx. (Linda and co-author Robin Koval created the ad company that came up with the famous jingle “I don’t want to grow up I’m a Toys R Us Kid” and the Herbal Essences shampoo ad “Yes Yes Yes” Totally Organic Experience - inspired by the famous When Harry Met Sally movie scene.)
Ditch the dream
New York University researchers interviewed graduates about their future plans. Each was placed in one of two groups - The Dreamers “I am going to be a famous author”/“I’m going to be a Chief Financial Officer” etc, or The Plodders “I might need to do an extra course”/ “I need to re-do my resume” . At the end of 5 years The Dreamers had gone nowhere. The Plodders were “climbing Mt Everest with toothpicks” – well on their way to success.
Plan for the worst case scenario
Nik Wallenda crossed the Grand Canyon gorge on a highwire without a safety harness or net. But he rehearsed and trained for 5 years in his backyard using wind machines to recreate sandstorms and hurricanes. The trick is not to prepare, it’s to over prepare. Create your own highwire. Imagine your client has 10 million friends on Facebook!
No expiration date
Linda claims it’s a ridiculous notion that you have to make it by the time you’re 30. The fastest growing demographic in the U.S. (and Australia/NZ) are centenarians, so what’s the rush? Take the time to perfect what you’re doing instead of bouncing around from job to job.
